Celie and Shug in The Color Purple Essay Example

Celie and Shug in The Color Purple Paper The Color Purple’s main protagonist Celie is a young black woman living in the Southern United States. Celies letters in The Color Purple spans about 40 years. Although the letters are not dated it is thought they begin in the late 1920s or early 1930s. During these 40 years Celie is the victim and survivor of racial hatred and harrowing incestuous abuse from her father. Celie’s children are stolen away from her and she put into a marriage where the psychological abuse does more harm to her than the physical abuse. With no self esteem or parental role models, Celie finds solace in a singer called Shug Avery, whom I believe is instrumental in Celie’s development as a woman and her search for an identity in an unforgiving world that grinds her down at every given opportunity. When reading this excruciatingly sad tale, identity or lack of identity stands out from page one. The only introduction we get to Celie is that she 14 year old, innocent girl who has had the grave misfortune of being born into a black family of the early 1900s. Celie’s family itself has no identity. Being black in the United States of America meant that you were not part of the predominately white social structure.Outcasts of a society of whose white government were doing everything possible so that these families were not able to obtain an identity. It’s possible that because of this black identity crisis that Celie’s father, referred to as Pa, Fonso or Alphonso has a problem with realising his own identity as a father to her. Seeing Celie as only a sexual instrument at the tender age of 14, the rape of Celie by her father left her with no one to turn to but God. Asking God for a ‘’sign to let me know what is happening to me’’ (Walker , 1992, p3). I believe the rape itself left Celie with a damaging but not misplaced mistrust of men. Throughout the novel in Celie’s letters she refuses acknowledge the names of most of male characters, not giv We will write a custom essay sample on Celie and Shug in The Color Purple specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now We will write a custom essay sample on Celie and Shug in The Color Purple specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer We will write a custom essay sample on Celie and Shug in The Color Purple specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer

Among all of the political leaders studied in class who do you think Essay

Among all of the political leaders studied in class who do you think represent the true characteristics of a good leadership and why do you think the rest of t - Essay Example A leader should have a clear vision in his mind about where he is standing right now and how far he has to go to pursue his dreams. He must have the quality to translate his vision into solid form. Without having a clear picture in his mind one cannot achieve the desired goal. Only vision is not sufficient to get the job done. The leader should form a team of experts who will deliver. The erstwhile chairman of General Electric Company has very rightly pointed out that "Good leaders create a vision, articulate the vision, passionately own the vision and relentlessly drive it to completion." The leader should be disciplined, hard working and has the burning desire to pursue his dreams. Action can be termed as the focal point of a leader. A good leader always puts in efforts in pursuance of his vision and influences others to do with the same zeal and enthusiasm. A true leadership gives the credit where the credit is due. He takes the ownership of good or bad actions. He cannot be absolved himself from any failure. As a team leader, he passes on the bucket of fruits of success to his team mates and takes the blame of any of his follies. He treats himself at par with other fellow citizens. He believes in that only good deeds can make them popular amongst the people. In this respect, we may quote here the name of Asian Leader, Mahatma Gandhi. He should be good listener as far as the ideas of others are concerned. He has every right to accept the ideas or reject it but with cogent reasons. The openness policy surely opens the doors of mutual trust and respect between the leaders and the followers. Â   A good leader should be clear in his statement in order to avoid any misunderstanding. He should be firm in achieving the desired results. According to survey conducted by the Americans Psychological Association, the most common weaknesses found in the

MRI - Essay Example Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) produces detailed images of the body’s internal organs and problems associated with the organs. It is procedure that has typically no side effects and cast images with no fear of pain. The process uses magnetised radio radiations and draws the images when the waves reflect back to the scanner. It is different from the CT scan or CAT scan. An MRI scanner is composed of two donut shaped tubes that are joined by a hollow tunnel that holds a person. The donut shaped tubes produce powerful magnetized radiation. A sliding table holds patients and it slides into the tunnel of the scanner. However, some MRI centres have MRI scanner with larger openings to hold patients that are suffering from claustrophobia. Most hospitals now have MRI scanners; while dedicated MRI centres are also opened for the ease of patients. The MRI scanner generates powerful magnetic waves that interact with the atoms of the patient’s body. During interaction the magnetic waves makes the atoms of body to be in particular pattern. The pattern is observed by the powerful antenna and sent to the computed that draws an image with respect to the observed pattern. Computer converted image both in 2d and 3d formats. The results are viewed by the physician to diagnose the problem. Kindly bring other examination reports like X-ray, Ultra sound, CT scans, Nuclear Medicine Scans or previous MRI scan reports along with you, if you can. Amazon.coms Business Model Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Amazon.coms Business Model - Research Paper Example As a result of stiff competition in business, the company has devised a new mechanism that aims at cushioning itself from the current inflation and economic recession by engaging in other business such as selling electronic devices, toys, food and music. The company also offers shipping transport to other airlines thus maximizing its profits from all the sectors. The success and economic growth of Amazon Company are grounded on the following principles that are customer oriented: convenience, pricing and selection. From the Swot analysis approach, it has been established that combining these three factors improves the company’s image by developing loyalty, trust and commitment to customers. This is one of the strategies that have been used by Amazon Company to lay off most of its competitors as it enhances high productivity and efficiency in the Company. Part 1.A: Pros of Amazon.com The prosperity and economic growth of Amazon organization is grounded on the following advantag es: Leverage of economies of scale: The company has greatly utilised the availability of fixed assets that are related to distribution and storage of goods by offering shipping services. Through the interaction of many customers the company markets its products thus expanding its market share to other regions of the world. Expansion of the market share: For any company to prosper in the business arena, it should develop strategy plans that aim at distributing its goods and services at the lowest cost. With the advancement of science and technology coupled with the easy access to internet, the company has in the recent time launched a new website. In this website the company has managed to display more goods and services that its offers to consumers thus increasing its sales volume. Localization of goods and services: From the past experiences, the company has realized that most consumers lacked some of the related goods that the company availed in their shelves, hence compelling cus tomers to shop them elsewhere. In order to counteract such effect, Amazon Company has increased the brands of goods by ensuring that there is one-stop shopping centre. Customers are now in a position to buy all their goods from one main location. Provision of availing other related goods: This idea aims at taking into account the needs and preferences of all the customers on the purchased goods. For instance, if a consumer has bought a book and he has eyesight problems, the company should be in a position to sell reading glasses to that customer rather than sending him to other shops. This idea has also improved the company’s image globally in the sense that it consumers are allowed to make orders based on their personal interests and preference. Implementation of effective marketing strategy: Marketing is a crucial facet in an organizational operation because it allows the company to realize the efforts made from the production system. It connects the organizational goals an d objectives with the needs of the customers as stipulated in the market domain. Amazon Company adopted the strategy of market segmentation which allows flexibility in product distribution. Based on the demand and population density, the company produces goods that are specifically meant for a certain portion of the population hence satisfying the needs of consumers. Part 1.B: Cons faced by Amazon Company The journey to the Company’s success has not been smooth without the challenges and drawback as highlighted below. Stiff competition from other companies: The world of business can be compared to a battle field where the mighty survive while the weaklings perish. Consequently, well established organizations have a high chance of

Types of motivation

Types of motivation Five Types of Motivation: Have you ever wondered what drives you, to want to become a better person? That feeling you get when you want to accomplish something that seems out of reach, that feeling that makes you do dumb things that you know you should not do, but do it anyway so a certain someone would like you better. That feeling that made you want to work harder in class to get that gold star up by your name, or that fear of being punished if you did not work harder. Well each one of those feelings is a different type of motivation. What is motivation? â€Å"Motivation is internal and external factors that stimulate desire and energy in people to be continually interested in and committed to a job, role, or subject, and to exert persistent effort in attaining a goal. Motivation is the energizer of behavior and mother of all action. It results from the interactions among conscious and unconscious factors such as the (1) intensity of desire or need, (2) incentive or reward value of the goal, and (3) expect ations of the individual and of his or her significant others. (BusinessDictionary.com, 2009) There is many different types of motivation but the five main ones that I will cover in this paper are Achievement motivation, Socialization motivation, Incentive motivation, Fear motivation, and Change motivation. Achievement motivation is the motivation that a person gets when they want to attain a goal. It is that drive that makes you do what needs to be done to reach that goal no matter what the cost. This form of motivation can be related to a track and field athlete. That sprinter knows that his competitor is a few seconds faster than he is. So that athlete is going to feel that drive to practice harder and longer to become that few seconds faster to win. If there is a goal that needs to be reached Achievement motivation is most likely to be used. Most individuals with high Achievement motivation have distinctive characteristics witch separate them from their peers. First they like to put themselves in situations where they can take a personal responsibility for their finding solutions to problems. This gives them a personal satisfaction for their achievements. A second characteristic of Achievement motivation people is that they like to set moderately high goals. This will give that person more personal satisfaction for reaching them goals. Another distinctive characteristic of high achievers is that they love to get feedback on their performance. Socialization motivation is the motivation that drives people to act or do certain things to fit in. The dictionary definition of Social motivation is â€Å"An incentive or drive resulting from a sociocultural influence that initiates behavior toward a particular goal.† (Mosbys Medical Dictionary, 2009) This motivation is most evident when there is a lot of peer pressure. Some people use this motivation to gain feeling of acceptance or being equal to their peer group. Some examples of socialization motivation could be that young kid being passed that first drink, being told that he is not cool if he doesnt drink it. Incentive motivation is influenced by beliefs, that if they accomplish the task they will receive a reward. Incentive motivation is closely linked to achievement motivation. The only difference is that with incentive motivation, your drive is to attain that reward after you reached that goal. Whereas achievement, is more focused on just attaining the goal itself. Fear motivation is mostly used when incentives do not work. This motivation is the drive to do things because the fear of punishment or failure. Fear motivation is the fastest acting tactics to motivate someone to do something. An example of this motivation is the motivation you feel when you see that speed limit sign and want to go a little faster but are scared of that cop that could be up the road waiting for you. Or when someone shoots at you and you become motivated to run a lot faster. Another example of this is test anxiety or fear of failure. Having this fear will get you to study harder or concentrate little better to succeed. â€Å"Most of this research fails to distinguish among the components of test anxiety or to recognize it as only the negative side of motivation, that is, only half the story of the performance in evaluative situations. The positive side of motivation (e.g., need for achievement) is also aroused in evaluative situations and makes a contribution. (Har old F. Oneil, 1994) Fear motivation always points out consequences you will receive if you dont do or accomplish certain tasks. Change motivation is the push you feel when you want to bring change in your life or surroundings. Its that motivation you feel to get out in your front yard to cut that grass because you are sick of seeing it long every day. Its the motivation you get after you become tired of how things are and seek ways to improve it and make it better. These five theories of motivation are just a few types that drive you to be the person you have become today, and that will push you to become a better person and make you want to improve yourself every day. Now knowing each one of these five types of motivation, you know what gets you through each day. References BusinessDictionary.com. (2009). BusinessDictionary.com. Biopsychosocial Analysis of Maria Andrade Essay

Maria Andrade is 79 years old. She came to America as a Cuban refugee at the age of 20. She was raised by her grandparents in Cuba. She began working at the age of 14. When she arrived in Miami, she was able to obtain part time employment and immediately enrolled herself in ESL classes. Thereafter she attended community college for about two years. She then moved to Los Angeles due to being accepted to UCLA where she obtained a BA in Sociology and a Masters’ in Business Administration. She worked for a private bank for about 24 years where she met her current husband. She now works for the Department of Public Social Services where she has been working for about 25 years and is planning on retiring in the near future. She has been working for the past 49 years non -stop not including the years she worked in Cuba. Maria got married at the age of 30 and has been married since. I recall Maria stating that although she is looking forward to retirement and loves her husband very much, one reason she is not looking forward to retirement is due to the fact that she will now have to spend the majority of her time with her husband. She feels that one of the reasons they have had a long successful marriage is due in part to the fact that she and her husband have not had to spend all their time together and have been able to have separate lives away from each other due to both of them having full time employment with different schedules. The reason I mention the marriage is because she has been working for 49 plus years and therefore, she will now have to adjust to a new life that does not include work. Maria also stated that when she retires she will be able to spend more time with her grandchildren and close friends and family. She will continue to be active by gardening, walking, swimming and any other activity that her mind, body and soul as she  puts it, allow her to. Maria understands the importance of maintaining an active life style â€Å"The new model for successful aging includes physical and mental well-being and contains three elements: avoiding disease and disability, sustaining high cognitive and physical function, and engaging with life (NIMH, 2002; Row & Kahn, 1997). The reason Maria is able to remain active now is because she began taking care of herself as a teenager after both of her parents passed from severe cases of diabetes. She made a conscious decision to always eat healthy and remain physically active. She kept this way of thinking even after arriving in a foreign country. Although diabetes runs in her family, she has been able to remain free of diabetes and other major health issues that seem to plague older people. She feels that majoring in Sociology helped her to understand the importance of how living a healthy life style from an early age will help in the aging process, â€Å"In early childhood, the life cycle’s second phase, learning physical autonomy and control of one’s bodily functions, versus shame and doubt in not learning them, paves the way for coping with deterioration of the body in old age† (Hillier, Barrow, 9e, p76). At 79 years old, since I have known Maria, she has not had been on any type of medical leave. She believes that her parents’ death served as a wake-up call for her. She feels that if it were not for both of them dying, she may not have lived to 79 years old because she would have eventually developed diabetes. Her mental well being was affected so much so that at one point while still in Cuba, she was starving herself in order to avoid eating the â€Å"wrong foods†. She eventually learned what types of food were healthy and unhealthy. Maria feels that her perceptions, intelligence, learning, memory and personality have been affected but only because she feels that it is part of the natural aging affected process, â€Å"Normal aging includes stable intellectual functioning, capacity for change, and productive engagement with life† (Hillier, Barrow, 9e, p122). She admits to once in a while not remembering where she left items. Although her perceptions and memory have been slightly affected, she has been able to maintain a work load of 400 plus cases. As mentioned before, once she retires, she will be spending a lot of time with family and friends. Maria and her siblings became even closer after her parents passed away. Together they experienced the deaths of both parents and they travelled together from Cuba and have not separated since. Therefore, she understands the importance of having family and friends in your life, â€Å"Given their shared experiences, siblings can be a major resource for life review among older adults†, (Hillier, Barrow, 9e, p153). She keeps close relationships with her brother and sister as she is the eldest and has always been protective of them. Maria and her husband will assume the roles of babysitters for their grandchildren. They volunteered to take care of their grandchildren as part of their plan to continue with their active lifestyle. Maria understands how important she and her siblings were to her own grandparents as they were raised by her mother’s parents. Maria will continue to be physically active by walking, gardening and swimming and will continue with her friendships. Currently she meets with her friends once a week due to her full time work schedule; however, once she is retired, she is planning on meeting with her friends every other day. She knows how important friendships are; therefore, she understands that by maintaining her friendships so close to her, she will be able to turn to them for support as she feels that she may need it once she retires, â€Å"Friendship is extremely important in the lives of elderly people† (Hillier, Barrow, 9e p162). As for her husband, she believes that he is a blessing because she understands that not everyone is lucky enough to live a long married life, let alone getting to an older age while still having your spouse by your side. Maria feels that he has been an integral part of her overall well being. He supports her with everything she does. They both maintain well eating habits and daily exercise although she states that he protests at times, â€Å"Marriage maintains health: married people tend to have higher levels of well-being and better health than unmarried people† (Hillier, Barrow, 9e p174).

Nursing Professional Portfolio Example

Nursing Professional Portfolio Example Nursing Professional Portfolio – Coursework Example Nursing Professional Portfolio Nursing Professional Portfolio Knowledge in genetics is important to a nurse since genetics throughits central role in revealing the basics of health and illnesses, risks of each disease, as well as how the body responds to treatment. Putting this into consideration, therefore, one would note that genetics and nursing share a common objective of health promotion and disease intervention (Lewis, 2012). Knowledge in genetics is equally important when in diagnosis through analysis of patients’ family histories. Using this knowledge, nurses are able to identify patients from families with high risk of developing genetically influenced conditions. Knowledge in genomics is also important to a nurse as it provides background information on the possible causes of the most complex human disorders. Genomics as an emerging field in genetics provides critical knowledge to nurses on the developments in this field and on effects of the developments on health s ervices administered to patients. It could for example inform decision on prevention and management of genetic disorders. Knowledge in genethics is equally important to a nurse considering that genetics remains a sensitive field with several ethical issues. To a nurse, knowledge in genethics helps in making decisions on paternalism and distributive justice (Lewis, 2012). Since not all patients agree with some genetic practices, it is important that a nurse gets equipped with knowledge on how to manage ethical issues arising from genetics. Conclusively, one would note that unlike in the past, there is a growing need for nurses to gain knowledge in genetics, genomics, and genethics due to the changing roles of nurses. American X essays

American X essays When driving home on Friday, after watching this movie, all I could think about was racism and how it is still a big problem in the United States and even the world. It made me so upset that people can be this ignorant and narrow-minded in this world today. Knowing that this issue will never go way I want to know research as much as I can to help victims of these careless crimes. Coming from a well diverse background, racism is not a stranger to me. Never experiencing it myself I knew that it was going on, but I had no idea what it lead to. The only knowledge of racism I know in depth comes from reading books and watching moves on the issue. I feel so angry with myself for being so naive on this subject. Not knowing how it fells mentally or physically I cannot relate to this movie. But I am so grateful that I have never had to experienced such violence and hateful act such as this. I had so many mixed emotions after watching this movie that I did not know how to feel. I have never been this angry in my life, knowing that this happens everyday sickens me and I feel discussed that people act and feel this way towards different. I do not know how some one can live with so much hate and anger as these characters live with. No one could benefit from this way of thinking. Racism and hatred always ends with pain and sorrow. This is were I think it all started was when their father educates Derek on Dr. Sweeny class and what kind of person he is. Then when his father dies fighting a fire in a predominately black neighborhood it sits Derek off and he starts to take what his father said in his own hands. Later he meets Cameron who seems to say all the right things at all the right moments in this very crucial time of his life. They both team up to make up a gang of young and naive misfits. Structure of the suggested Central Bank for GCC and How might this Assignment

Structure of the suggested Central Bank for GCC and How might this bank be similar or different from the European Central Bank - Assignment Example They would only majorly borrow traits from systems like that of the EU central Banking system. Formulation of the likely structure is therefore of fundamental and of primary concern and ensuring that the structure is the most suitable and applicable is paramount. Proper systems would ensure that the costs of banking within the region are highly regulated and that tight controls are ensured of money and money operations. Introduction Our main task in this assignment is to discuss the likely structure of the suggested GCC Central Bank. We are also required to its similarity and differences with the European Central Bank. Furthermore, we have to find the arguments supporting and those against such a system and most importantly the objectives of the system. The GCC central bank has the main aim of bringing together the operations of the 5 central banks within the U.A.E in a regulatory manner. It would therefore be modeled in a closed system of financial accounts; this means that the equi librium volume of banks intermediation between the households and corporate would show structural measures like preferences to households, cost structures, loan demand by corporate (Cobham & Dibeh 2011). Inclusive in the structure would be the integration of the differences in borrowing and deposit rates of the central banks of the five countries (Grauwe & Dewachter 1999). The structure also is inclusive of the width of the central bank standing facilities corridor as well as the stance of the monetary policy. This is to enable the system be in the position of cushioning the U.A.E against any form of financial crisis (Rajan & Zingales 1998). The banking systems of the GCC countries is mostly dominated by a very small number of both domestic and foreign commercial banks making any dealing involving finances to be quite of an uphill task. This system is designed in manner to help provide better and more information to enhance decision making hence enhance the efficiency of the U.A.E e conomy in terms of resource allocation hence general improvement of welfare (Hamori & Hamori 2010). It has a monetary policy unit mandated with the task of designing monetary policy for the promotion of price stability, sustainable economic growth and a stable financial system within the UAE. Policies established have the impact of reducing by a wider margin a level of uncertainty and the established monetary policy unit is expected to reduce the noise because of policy makers in an economic environment (Levine & Renelt 1992). The proposed GCC central bank is formulated by an act prepared by the 5 member countries. This is due to the desire of the countries to form one central bank body for the sake of uniformity in the monetary and fiscal policies governing their financial systems. The Acts confers the GCC central bank with the responsibilities of formulating monetary policy, ensuring price stability, issuing a common currency and performing any other functions conferred to it by t he Act (Rajan & Zingales 1998). It has a central head office with branches located in each of the countries that have come together to form this form of financial organization. The system will also run currency centers in specified locations within the UAE region. The suggested arrangement will have assistant governors to support the activities and decisions by a central governor (Smits 1997). The directors will still be there with the governor at the head office to help in the daily

Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci - Essay Example The Mona Lisa wasn’t considered as Leonardo’s most important work during his time but as the years passed it was considered to be important in the history of art. During the time of Leonardo, many artists and contemporaries fail even to comment on the painting, until an artist named Vasari did, which leads other artists to give their attention to the painting. Vasari caught his attention on the skill of Leonardo which is the subject of admiration or she was focused more on the technical part of the painting. The painting was one of the reasons for new thoughts and techniques for the artists of the Renaissance period. Through this painting da Vinci was able to introduce a form of accomplishing realism. He used sfumato, chiaroscuro and atmospheric perspective, shadow painting which molds composition. Chiaroscuro has the capability to provide lifelike objects. Leonardo had proven that by blurring the edges and the light that strike them will blend the forms and provide lif elike objects. Sfumato has the ability to hold space to the objects’ depth and be a mysterious environment. Atmospheric is one the techniques that had been introduced through this painting. This kind of technique is more on â€Å"optical phenomena that a structure mathematical system† (Kleiner 547). The hues are more bluish and paler, the outlines are less precise, the small details are lost, and the color contrasts are muted. Through these techniques, Leonardo was able to give the other artists a thing to be handed down.
